Hookup. Cruising. Right now.

Gay hookup and cruising app in San Francisco

Now open in San Francisco

yoBreeder is a gay hookup and cruising app for men looking for action, for tops, breeders, and the men who want them. It is for men who want more than just oral: penetration, intercourse, the full experience. If you are looking for just oral, this won't be your match, and it says so up front, so nobody wastes a night finding out.

It runs in your browser. No app to install, no app store listing, and nothing on your home screen unless you put it there yourself.

One honest note. yoBreeder started on the other coast, in Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and it is new in San Francisco. New men are joining, it is free, and Browse shows every one of them nearest first, so you never have to wonder who is being hidden from you.

Seven miles square, and most of it uphill

San Francisco is small for a big city, roughly seven miles on each side, with the ocean on one edge and the bay on the other two. That makes distance on a hookup app read differently here. A mile is nothing. A mile with a hill in the middle of it is something else, and a man who looks close but is actually across the water in Oakland is a different evening altogether. yoBreeder puts the distance on every card so you can make that call yourself.

It is also a city where a lot of gay history happened first. Before the Castro, Polk Street was the centre of gay San Francisco, and the city's first Pride march went down Polk in 1970. The rainbow flag was first flown here, at the Gay Freedom Day parade in 1978.

What you get

Everyone, nearest first

Browse shows every member near you, sorted by distance. Your block first, then the neighbourhoods over the hill, then across the bay.

Say it, don't type it

Tell Cypher out loud what you want and it finds the men whose profiles match, instead of making you set six filters.

Send your location when you're ready

Once you have talked, one tap in a private chat sends him exactly where you are, with directions. Only to him, only when you choose.

The Castro, and the man on the plaza

The Castro is what most people mean when they say gay San Francisco. The giant rainbow flag flies over Harvey Milk Plaza at Castro and Market, and the rainbow crosswalks at Castro and 18th mark the middle of the neighbourhood.

Harvey Milk opened a camera shop on Castro Street in 1973 and ran his campaigns out of it. In 1977 he won a seat on the Board of Supervisors, the first openly gay man elected to office in California, and in November 1978 he was shot and killed at City Hall. The plaza carries his name, and the Castro Street Fair he started in 1974 still fills the neighbourhood every October.

SoMa, Folsom and Up Your Alley

South of Market is the other half of gay San Francisco, and the leather half. Folsom Street has been the home of the city's leather scene for generations, and in 2018 the city made the western part of SoMa the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District.

Two street fairs bring men in from around the world. Up Your Alley, which a lot of men still call Dore Alley, takes over Dore Alley and a block of Folsom on the last Sunday in July. The Folsom Street Fair, on the last Sunday in September, closes Folsom for blocks and ends Leather Pride Week.

Fair weekends are when a hookup app earns its keep. The streets are packed with strangers, and yoBreeder lets you find out who is nearby and what he is after before you are standing in the crowd.

Where the men in San Francisco are

Nobody on yoBreeder is cut off at a city line, and around the bay the lines are everywhere. These are the places men come from.

The Castro

Castro and Market, 18th Street and the hills around them. Duboce Triangle and Noe Valley are a short walk away.

SoMa

Folsom, Harrison and the blocks around them. Leather, lofts, and men who work in the towers downtown.

The Mission and Bernal Heights

Just over the hill from the Castro. Sunnier, younger, and home to men who live and go out on the same few streets.

Polk Street and the Tenderloin

Where gay San Francisco was before the Castro. Apartments, old history and men who live close to downtown.

Oakland and the East Bay

Across the Bay Bridge, or a few minutes under the bay on BART. Oakland and Berkeley are their own world, and they show up as you scroll.

Who yoBreeder is for here

Tops, breeders, and the men who want them, on both sides of the bay. San Francisco mixes men who have been here for decades, men who moved here for work in tech, and men in for a fair weekend or a conference downtown. yoBreeder does not sort them for you. It shows you all of them by distance and lets the profiles say what each man is after.

It is also a city where being out is easy and privacy still matters. Plenty of men are out everywhere and would still rather keep who they hook up with to themselves. That is what an app is for.

How it works

1. Join

An email, your birthday and what you are into. No city to type, it works that out.

2. Look

Every member near you, nearest first. Not a sample, not a paywalled list. Everyone.

3. Say it

Tell Cypher what you are after and it matches you on it.

4. Meet

Message anyone. When you are ready, send him your location and meet, in the Castro, in SoMa or wherever suits you both.

Getting a reply

Put a photo up. Men with one get answered far more often than men without, and the app will tell you so rather than leave you guessing. A short profile video counts too.

Say something specific. One message that mentions what he actually wrote does better than "hey" to twenty men. And look at the distance on every card. In San Francisco a mile can mean two hills, and the man in Oakland can be closer on BART than he is on the bridge at rush hour.

The San Francisco year

SF Pride is the last weekend in June, with the parade down Market Street and the celebration at Civic Center. Up Your Alley follows at the end of July and the Folsom Street Fair at the end of September, and both turn SoMa into one long weekend. The Castro Street Fair comes on the first Sunday in October. Outside those weekends, evenings and Friday and Saturday nights are when most men have their phones out.

The rest of California, and South Florida

yoBreeder is open across California: here, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Palm Springs and San Diego. Browse works the same everywhere, because it starts from wherever you are standing. If you go back and forth between San Francisco and South Florida, land in Fort Lauderdale or Miami and the men there are already on it, because South Florida is where yoBreeder began.

Why yoBreeder, when you are already on the other apps

Every hookup app says it is for everyone, which is how you spend a week finding out somebody wanted something different from you. yoBreeder says who it is for on the door. Men who want just oral are told plainly this isn't their app. That loses us signups and saves everybody the week. If you want to know where the name comes from, here is what "breeder" means, and here is how Breeder, Receiver and Both work on the app.

Grindr

The biggest, and a grid of everyone with no stated purpose, so you find out what a man wants by asking. Free accounts see a capped list.

Sniffies

A live map, and very good at cruising in the moment. It is about where he is; yoBreeder is about what he wants.

Scruff, Jack'd and the rest

General apps with a type attached. The app never says what it is for, so every conversation has to work it out.

yoBreeder

One purpose, stated publicly: more than just oral. Everyone visible, free messaging, voice search, nothing to install.

Staying private in San Francisco

San Francisco is dense, and on a dense block an exact pin is an apartment number. yoBreeder never shows one. Every member's position is blurred by between half a mile and a mile and a quarter before it leaves our server, so the map puts you in your part of town and never on your doorstep. The only way anyone sees exactly where you are is if you send it to him yourself, in a private chat.

There is no app on your home screen with a name on it, and you can delete your account yourself from your own profile, without emailing anybody.

Questions

Is yoBreeder free in San Francisco?

Yes. A profile, browsing every member near you and messaging are all free. Premium is optional, costs $7 a month, and adds extras like incognito mode and video calling. It never unlocks people.

Is yoBreeder active in San Francisco yet?

yoBreeder started in South Florida and is new in San Francisco, and new men are joining. Browse shows every member nearest first, with no capped list and no paywall, so whoever is on near you is the first thing you see.

Do I need to download an app?

No. yoBreeder runs in your phone browser at yobreeder.com. There is nothing to install and nothing named on your home screen unless you choose to add it.

Does it show men in Oakland and the East Bay too?

Yes. yoBreeder does not stop at a city line, or at the water. It shows every member near you, nearest first, so Oakland, Berkeley, the rest of the East Bay and the Peninsula are all there as you scroll.

I am in town for Folsom or Up Your Alley. Can I use it while I visit?

Yes. Join from your phone browser when you land, with nothing to install. Browse starts from wherever you are standing, so in SoMa you see the men around you. Your position is blurred by between half a mile and a mile and a quarter before it leaves our server, so nobody sees which hotel you are in.

Who is yoBreeder for?

Tops, breeders, and the men who want them. Men looking for more than just oral: penetration, intercourse, the full experience. It says so on the door, so everyone on it is looking for the same thing.
